DEBATING GARDENS
December 2, 2023
In the age of the internet, the spread of misinformation is at an all-time high, the tribal mindset of the current generations demonstrates a dangerous result of, people who blindly follow their idols without any sort of self-awareness and desire for self-discovery halting our progress as humanity. As such, Debating Gardens aims to provide a solution to the split communities by creating a neutral space of debate, negotiation and information. As within the history of the Glasgow Gangs which often fought on the river banks due to their neutral standings, Debating Gardens aims to utilise the Glasgow City Union Bridge to create a space for all communities to gather and share their own experiences. Debating Gardens aims to create a neutral standing, and in order to create that, there is a necessity for unbiased information, this will be housed within the library, these books, texts and other written media will be donated by the local communities that wish to share their perspective to the other communities. After reading these texts the visitors can go forwards and towards the coffee-house and with their spare time discuss this with their friends or by themselves learn more about the said topic. Lastly, the visitors can go to the main sacred area of the building. In the debating Garden, within this sacred space of tranquillity and enlightenment, the aim is to spread your own perspective between the people present and come towards an understanding. This can be done in a variety of ways, the first way is through the speaker stage where all people can face the stage in their seats, the second is through a competitive debate, the chairs can be aligned to face each other and two or more teams can debate among themselves. Lastly if people are undecided people can take it upon selves and stand upon the seats and preach their opinion towards other people standing nearby and therefore resulting another form of debate.
